Alt Hed: Who the hell am I????
Time for the life story… sit back and grab a beer. My name is Kevin, and I’m 31. I’m from Dallas TX, and spent most of life here, minus my time in the military. My poker story begins about 4 or 5 years ago. I downloaded PokerStars after seeing a commercial and started like most, on the play money tables. About the same time, my good buddy Greg that I worked with did the same. Soon there after, Greg started playing in live games, at first at the casinos, soon after in the underground scene in Dallas. I was still playing for fun, and we started hosting home games. Little $10 single table SNG’s followed by $20 buy in cash games. I managed to win a few bucks here and there, but it was mostly just a learning experience. After a few games, it was time to hit the casinos for real.
My first expedition was a $4/$8 Limit game at the Horshoe in Shreveport, LA. Greg and I got there at about 9 or 10 AM, and we went to the cashiers desk with $200 each. We’re at the top of the list, and within 15 minutes, we have a full brand new table. I start out playing extra tight, not wanting to make myself look like an idiot, but I keep getting great hands. People are calling constantly, and before I know it, I’m sitting on about $650 in a damn $4/$8 game. Fast forward about 6 hours… I’m still at the table, but now I’m down to about $200. What the hell just happened??? I got sucked into the limping game and it kicked my ass. I decide it’s time to get back to basics. I need to just sit back, relax, and think… get back to my game. I swear I folded an hour’s worth of hands. Had to get my head right. After a while, I just told myself, I’d know when it was right. I look down at Q-10s on the button… it’s time to play. 5 to the flop, and I flop the open ended str8 flush. I go back in balls to the wall and pull down about a $45 pot. Next hand is a $60 pot with two pair. I’m back and running. Played an hour or so more, and finished with about $285 total, for a net profit of $85. It wasn’t much, but I learned an important lesson about my limits. It was a marathon 16 hour session. I haven’t tried that again since.
Since then, I’ve had many limit sessions, and moved to the $10/$20 limit game at Winstar in Oklahoma. I’ve also started playing $1/$2NL and $2/$5NL here in Dallas, but my best cash game is still the $10/$20 limit. I know whenever I need to grind one out, it’s there for me. I’ve been known to play some of the tournaments around here in Dallas, but mostly I’m a cash game player.
Well, the intro is out of the way… now you know a little about me. It’s time to get back to the table.
