First of all, the professor gave a nice description of the betting that should be basically all you need to know, but I will try to explain a situation you made up. Here, Player A raised it 40 more. Player B raises it 40 more (which would now be the minimum raise because of the first raise). Player C raised it 400 (which is now the minimum raise). Player D can raise to 900, which would be 400 more, or anything above that. The betting rules don't really matter how much a player puts in total, it matters how much more they put it.
