Default big push in tourneys

Hi there i was wondering if any of you more ecpeirenced players cna give me some advice. Im fairly new to the poker secne ive been playing regularly for about 4 months now. I normally do well in sit n gos 9 out of 10 times in the money but when it comes to larger tourneys i find it difficult to push on. By this i mean i can normally get in good position chips wise then seem to play far to cautiously. Even when i feel i have a hand that deserves to call or raise a bet i seem to sit on it or fold the cards i would have normally played in smaller tourneys????????

Can anybody give any advice on this or am i being a muppet and just play the cards.............

May the flop be with you

well i havent been playing too long either but im actually better in the big tournies than in the sit n gos. u gotta be able to fold ur crappy hands and wen u think u hav a good one u gotta be in there strong. if ur intimidated in poker chances are ur not gonna do so well.

I know what you mean mate the thing is its probably a mind set i get into wanting to hold onto my chips. Whereas in sit n gos i am a lot more aggressive.

Ill have to get some mind over matter books a read and sort it out.

May the flop be with you.

in MTT's (Multi Table Tourneys) at the beginning it pays to play tight and win a small amount of big hands, The problem i think you are having is that when in the later stages someone has a big chip lead they can start to make it hard for players on smaller chips to play hands, as a chip leader in a big tourney you can steal the huge blinds by playing aggressively, making the smaller stacked players play tighter. When in this situation you need to defend your blinds, you need to try and combat the aggressor, when he makes a raise in an early position you need to re-raise him all-in you need to take a few risks on medium ranking hands, especially in free-roll style multi tournaments, everyone is going for the win and will take many more risks.

Additionally you rarely ever see a truely tight player win a tournament. When you have the chip advantage you want to be making raises pre-flop of about 3 times the big blind, forcing the smaller stacks to fold. Dont play in MTT's for the money, play for the win, 2nd is to me as bad as coming last. Get your chips out there, and play high Suited connectors( 7,8 upward) , Pocket Pairs, and premium hands, dont wait to long to get your chips in there if someone is dominating the play.

Thanks for the advice mate, ive seen a lot written about suited connectors.I have played them a few times in a game but to no avail, is it wise to play any value or just the higher connectors.

He doesn't mean play suited connectors all the time from any position... still need to be smart... play them in late position when you've got some callers in front of you and you'll be able to see the action after the flop.

Remember, when you're playing them, you're hoping to 'hit it' and then take someone else to the cleaners and that isn't going to happen every time. Even if you flop your top pair, unless it's top pair onthe board, you're not going to be able to be too aggressive in early positions.

Generally, he's right though... tight play can get you to the money but it doesn't win the big tournaments... once you get to that point, you've got to become selectively aggressive.

Noone makes a final table without having gotten a lucky draw somewhere along the way
