Default Please answer this SIMPLE question re play

A simple question again:
after the river, the final round of betting ensues.
I have 10000 in chips, my opponent has 2000. Can I go all in, i.e., all 10000 in chips for the final bet?
And if I do, what options does my opponent have?

Blanchie

You can go all-in, and if you do, he can call. If he calls, you will have 8000 chips returned to you since he can only call 2000 chips worth, or he can fold.

Ok this is a simple question but the answer might take a bit of getting your head round.

Unlike games such as Brag in poker (all forms) you cannot bankroll an opponent out of the pot whether in a live ring game or in a tournament.

If you are up against one opponent and say there was 6k in the pot already.

You go all in for 10k. What would happen is that he would call for all he had. All your spare chips (10k-2k) 8k would be returned to you then both sets of cards would be turned over and whoever won would win the pot of 10k.

If there were more players in the pot then the pots could split in two (or more). Say someone has 100 chips and goes all in and is called by 2 people .

The pot is say 350. Then you bet and the other guy in the pot calls you for 200. The pot would split in two. The 350 that all three of you are playing for and the 400 that just you and the other guy are playing for. If you play in tourneys then when it happens in practice it will be alot clearer.
