| | Advice For Beginners Starting To Put Real Money Online I just finished playing on PKR for 2 hours and I sat down on a 10 seater table which only had 1 other good player but the rest did not seem to know what they were doing. From what I saw I thought the best thing to do was to create a thread that would help people who are starting out putting real money down online. I was chopped down from $2 to 0.99 cents on a 2c/4c table but I worked my way back up to $2.58 and left. I had donkeys trying to tell me I'm a bad player but when I explain myself and also explain their bad moves and what they can do to sharpen their game, they don't listen. I thought, what am I wasting my time for, I'l just make a thread on a forum where people will listen.
First thing I want to say about putting real money down online is when I did it, it was the best thing I have done in ages. I was playing for 1 year online without using real money and now I'm having way more fun and learning a lot more from the game because I did this.
Next thing I want to ask is do you want to play with real money for fun? or do you want to play with real money with the intent of making money online?
If you want to just play for fun with real money and don't care to much about how much money your continously depositing down online to play, well thats ok 2 you can do that and theres not much more reason for you to continue reading this thread.
Obviously if you do want to get some tips on how to make money online then by all means continue reading.
First thing you might be thinking about is what poker program do I put real money down on, which is best for me?
Well, there probably isn't just 1 that is the best, but the one thats the best to start off on I can only give you a brief idea of the programs I know. Others that feel free to post about thier programs they use may do so and also help you out there.
I chose PKR to put my real money down on. All poker programs have a bonus that you should check out to see what you can get for how much money you put down, I chose the $50 bonus for PKR which basically gives you 3 months to make 7500 PKR points, if you do they will give you $50. Other reasons why I chose PKR are I liked its note taking method, as I play with other players I can tag them as a shark, or a fish, or something else and also write notes down about them and the next time I see them I can refer to the notes. PKR also has fairly good Freerolls, the Premium Freerolls are better which you use PKR points you have earnt to enter. I like the Deep & Steep Multi Table Tournaments where you start with 5000 in chips and 5min blinds. Interesting tournament because you can play hands out in the earily stage of the game but in the middle there are so many people that are short stacked that they go all in or fold. But when you get to the end part of the game all the chips have worked their way to the better players and then the players left which is about 35 can actually start playing hands because no one is short stacked, or theres probably 1 person thats short stacked. PKR also has Omaha, but thats it, Texas Holdem and Omaha which is a down side, I like Omaha High Low better but its still fun playing Omaha High. PKR is 3D and simulates real life which you can actually make physical tells, not anywhere near like real life but sometimes you can make a read from other players physical tells they put out there. Another reason why I like PKR is because they have 6 seater tables, uncommon to other programs. This means you can play looser cards on the table, but it does require a bigger bankroll to play on them because of variance.
Pokerstars is probably the most common one, you can pretty much play all the games you want to play from Limit, NoLimit, Pot Limit, Texas Holdem, Omaha, HORSE HOSE, 7 Card STUD and STUD Hi/Low, Omaha Hi/Lo, Razz, you can even play 5 Card Draw, the old poker everyone knows. The freerolls are hard to make money, you usually need to play one tournament with heaps of people and qualify for the next one to make some money.
Titan Poker is a good one, this one probably has the best Freerolls, you can play $50 and $100 Freerolls and over time when you have the VIP status you can play bigger freerolls like $1000 Freerolls. So if you want to try make money online from nothing Titan Poker is a good way to go.
After you have decided on the program you want and put your real money down the next thing you may be thinking is how can I play so that I don't end up loosing all my money in one go?
Well the answer to that is Bankroll Management. Here is the following Bankroll Management I am currently using:
1. Buy in to a 9 or 10 seater NoLimit or Pot Limit Ring Tables with at least 20x the buy in amount. With the exception of the lowest NoLimit Ring Tables where the limit is 0.01/0.02, I can play when ever I'm ready to.
2. Buy in to 6 seater NoLimit or Pot Limit Ring Tables with at least 25x the buy in amount.
3. Buy in to a Limit Ring Table with at least 300x the Big Blind amount. With the exception of the lowest limit tables, I can play when ever I'm ready to.
4. Buy in to Tournaments with at least 40x the buy in amount. With the exception for the lowest buy in for Single Table Tournaments and Multi Table Tournaments, I can play when ever I'm ready to but I am only going to play them as a reward for good Ring Table positive influence on my bankroll.
I also have what I call Cold Deck & Bad Beat Protection Methods in place which are as follows:
1. At any time if I think that being cold decked is effecting my game walk away. This will give me a chance to think about those hands I was folding that would have won and realise if it was a good fold or not, I may learn something from doing this.
2. At any time if I end up all in with another player and lose walk away. This will give me a chance to think about the hand if it was really a bad beat, I was out played or if I did something wrong and can learn from my mistakes and it can avoid me losing money because I'm on tilt.
3. Never play poker online when I'm tired, hungry or feeling run down.
Any questions you may have on this or even why you need a Bankroll Management System in place, don't hesitate to post and ask.
Now I'l give you a few tips on playing on the table. First thing is do you know about Pot Odds and Outs?
There are other threads that cover this topic but basically my point I want to make is if you don't know about Pot Odds and Outs you shouldn't be playing with real money on the table in the first place. Unless your just playing for fun, then thats ok.
Preflop Raising
One of the worst plays I've seen by beginners on the table is simply when they want to raise with a hand they just simply hit the raise button. When I want to raise Preflop, I never just hit that raise button I always type in the exact amount I want to raise which is never the minimum raise. The idea behind raising preflop is to limit the playing field so your up against 1 or 2 maybe 3 people when you see the flop. This gives you a better chance of winning because the less people that see the flop the less chance there is of someone floping a good hand or drawing hand that can smoke your pocket AA that you minimum raised with in first position. I believe there is a time for minimum raising preflop but thats for more advanced players who know what they are doing, so its best as a new player just to not do it. So how much should you raise? Well Daniel Negreanu says if your small balling raise 3x the big blind and if you have like 2 or 3 limpers in front of you raise 5x the big blind. If your hard balling its 5x or 8x.
When playing at the Flop Turn or River how much should I bet?
Simple it comes down to the pot size. A feeler bet is a bet you make to get an idea where you are at, its usually when you have hit but its not that good so you bet about 1/3 the pot. Just watch the pot in the middle of the table or if its like Pokerstars watch how much is up the top on the screen, telling you the pot size.
When you have something good bet half the pot or 2/3 the pot if you want to bet strong.
If you have an awesome hand then you should raise someones bet how much to raise is up to you again most of the time the best thing to do is not just hit the raise button try 3x the amount they have bet. You may have to make it 4x, you may just want to minraise because you have the best hand and you think your opponent doesn't have such a great hand and your trying to milk more money out of them.
My brother says you should never have to bet the pot, I tend to agree with him, but sometimes betting the pot when I do it is so strong that they all just fold which is exactly what I wanted anyway.
You should never overbet the pot, this means the pot is like $1000 and you make a bet like $1500. This is a bad idea, when you do this a good player is going to think that you don't really have it, but they don't have the nuts so they are folding. You may steel a fair few pots doing that but adventually a good player is going to call you because they are watching you do this and they are prepaired to call your massive bet when your trying to steel because they have the nuts this time, and they have been waiting for a chance to do it. This is where you can loose a lot of money.
Being a good poker player takes patients, skill and dicipline, if you have that or you are working on that then I think your going to get somewhere playing poker for real money online. Try to always expaned your knowlege base, read poker books, read forums like this one and good poker sites that have tips and tutorials. If you take all these things I've said onboard I think your definately ready to try puting your money online and experience the fun I do.
Good luck
