Default FEEL, GUT INSTINCT, AND TELLS

This is just an observation but I think the best poker players (Doyle, Phil, Gus) dont play by their hands they play by feel, gut instinct and tells. Its irrelevant to them what they have in their hands. Doyle bullying Phil with a 4 duece offsuit after Phil made a preflop raise as an example. Lets face it, we all wouldnt go all in with a 4 duece off..we all probulary wouldnt play it at all! We all would just throw it away!
Thoughts on this anyone?
Cali

i just watched that episode. there is a marathon of WPT on the travel channel all day today, and i will probably watch quite a few of the episodes.

anyway, back to your point, doyle did show phil who was boss. however, this was after phil trapped him perfectly with his pair of K's, only for doyle to hit his ace on the turn. doyle took the reigns from there, and pretty much owned phil the rest of the way. the top players do have an sixth sense of when their opponents are weak, and they will pounce all over it. i sometimes think gus takes it a little too far , but he has been successful, so we obviously can't knock it too much.

going back to the hand where doyle pushed with his ace high, and hit his ace on the turn vs. phil...had it been any other poker player on earth who hit that hand vs. hellmuth, we would have seen such an eruption out of phil, telling him how dumb he was to put his whole stack into the pot with a measly ace high, and to suck out on him. just goes to show how much respect doyle has, where even phil hellmuth will not erupt on him

I agree Cali and I try to play like that online to a fair amount of success at times, but at times you also look like a fool when it doesn't work out...that is what I refer to the mind game.

I have been keeping track of my recent SnG's...I have won many more pots without hitting any of my pocket cards then when I do hit them...the vast difference shocked me...if I didn't hit, I win...if I hit them, I lose. I might post my results as many of the wins are with junk hands.

you have to remember that most of the pro hands you see are at late stages of tourneys and the one in question when two players know each others poker game very very well.

Put doyle in a 10$ game (if he could be bothered to take it remotely seriously) with strangers and he would be playing a very very different game.

At a new table most of it will be almost entirely about the cards. Only once reads develop or the stakes/ blinds get high that other factors become major considerations.

Take billyboy - one of our more successful tourney players. You will hardly ever see him playing trash and I would say 90% of his preflop decisions are ENTIRELY about the cards and situational factors i.e. raises before him etc (sorry for using you as an example billy) and quite right too. Only once the field is sliming down and deep reads develop does the mind game become more important than the holdings and even then having the right cards is still crucial.

Whilst winning with trash is good for the ego it is dangerous to play this way.

In terms of crapshoots stats having seen crapshoot play I am not remotely surprised by this.

An aggressive player will often only get called by strong hands. You have aks on ak10 and go all in someone will call with aa, kk, 1010, j10, etc and whilst aq etc might well call often when you get action here you will be beat. Similarly with 228 if there has been much preflop action crap is precisely the type of player who will often win this hand because he has lots of guts. But if someone calls they will often have trip 2's here. 8as would appear strong on this hand, as would high pockets but both will lose to someone who makes a strange call to a big bet with 2x.

Myself i lose and win on all hands but all you will normally see me losing on 24os etc is my blinds.
