Well written posts mars but this is what makes this completely pointless in my book:

It's mathmatics based on guesswork... each number in the formula is a guess.

You are guessing the strength of your opponents hand compared to your own hand.

You are guessing what percentage of the time your opponent will fold.

Since you are basing the amount of your bet on your guess of how often your opponent will fold to different amounts then that even makes this number a guess.

Thats an awful lot of rigamorole to go through to come up with a number that will be completely inaccurate the majority of the time. Besides, even if you hit your numbers right on the money each time, we are talking about tournament play. It isn't a cash game where "coming out ahead in the long run" is what matters.

If you still remember him pass this on.

Point well taken - I'm fairly aware of this, I simply tend to take concepts a little too far when I want/need to procrastinate more important work (read: end-semester projects and studying for finals).

To counter the tournament factor (where, both you and I have stated, makes risky chip gains such as this much less valuable), you need to go into the concept of tournament equity, something which Collin Moshman explains the basics of in his book, Sit'NGo Strategy (See, rocket - some members here DO read the books you recommend!) Still, even posting his condensed version would make for a decently-sized post (one I'm not really prepared to do when I'm fully awake and don't have finals, nevermind when I'm tired and about to go to bed). I would suggest someone interested in the topic do some googling on the subject, you should be able to find all the wonderful formulas
