Default Preflop Raises?

I am asking all of you what hand do you put your opponent on or what are you on when an oversized raise (7x - 10x BB) is made preflop?

This is in general (beginning to middle game) because I know you will ask for variables that I do not have.

Yeah I suppose the variables make a difference to your judgement when you see a bet like that: stack sizes, position, previous hands and table image, was the raise made in an unopened pot etc etc

In an unopened pot, my general guesses when I see a raise like this is, in order of probability..
1. They have a very strong hand and would like action from another strong hand which they have dominated.
2. They are raising high to represent a weaker hand than they actually have.
e.g they raise the blinds from late representing a desperate steal.
3. They quite like their hand but they are scared of playing it. They want the blinds and don't really want any further action or similarly they maybe have a pocket pair and don't know quite what to do with.
3a. They have a pretty decent hand, not great.. but they are willing to enter a coin flip(or worse) race.
4. They have made a mistake with the slider or have misjudged the level.
5. They are trying out the table and making a play which they think may
create an image which they can use to their advantage.
6. They have lost the plot for a minute.

A lot would depend on how I judged them as a player, and also the stakes involved.

Thank you for mudding the waters...lol. Have you ever thought of running for public office? Just kidding.

All your points have validity.

Yeah, if you read between the lines - I'm sitting on the fence.
Maybe you're right - politics may suit me! All I'm really saying is I'm not sure what the bet means lol

I generally agree with letters view with a change of probably putting point 3 up to 1. This would be especially true if I had a read on the raiser and he was a heavy -ROI% player.

I find top players, with big hands wanting calls, rarely raise big upfront. Now if it is closer to the button and they are first in then I would agree that top players might do this play if they feel there is a weak player behind them who doesn't like being bullied.

THF Player of the Year
If the blinds are low and I raise preflop that much it means # 1 in my case.

OK, without reading replies yet my first thought when I see an over-sized raise preflop is something like QQ. Something that they really don't want to see a flop with. Strong means weak. It's as simple as that.

Of course your individual read means everything but without more info that's where I'd start.

In your case it could equally be 35x as well

Call me an idle git if you like, but I never bother to work it out, I just fold, unless I have a genuine reraise, in which case I figure their bet size includes the amount I would reraise, so I just call. No doubt I am missing opportunities, but in the long run it works out reasonably well and saves my brain cells from overwork. And more importantly, in those cases where I see the cards I am more often happy with the outcome than unhappy.
