Default Your early position, you've hit middle pair and there are 3 players in the pot

Your early position, you've hit middle pair and there are 3 players in the pot - what do you do?

im interested to hear how people usually play this situation

consider the following situations = for all situations ill assume that the flop is ragged and your kicker is average too

you hit middle pair when :-

* Situation 1 : Your in the small blind and the other two players are the big blind and the button (common situation)
* Situation 2 : Your in the big blind (ie. small blind didnt call so your first to act)
* Situation 3 : The big blind and small blind arent in the hand for some reason and as your under the gun, your first to act

Obviously every game is different but on average, how do you think you would act in these situations

Would you bet in any of these situations or would you check to see where you stand? If you bet, how much are you willing to bet?

1. Raise minimum, fold if re-raised.
2. Raise minimum, might call a reasonable raise depending on the cards out
3. Raise minimum unless the overcard is JKQA. I would then check and fold to any bet.

i think sometimes betting the minimum or betting less than you would if you had hit top pair might indicate weakness and induce a reraise

True but I often see the first bet out take down the pot. Even a weak bet. Alot depends on the situation, Chip stack, type players involved, cards out on flop etc. Generally speaking though you have to see where you are in the hand and a bet is the only way to find out. you can make a half pot bet and if called you are usually in control of the betting. If raised you can fold with slight damage.
I have that problen when ever I get an Ace rag in the blinds too, and an ace comes out on the flop. Do I want to raise with a weak kicker and someone is slow playing A10 from early position? I try and stay in the hand if possible, but its not a confident play.

i think a weak bet is gonna be successful more times in the first situation....eg the blinds and the button. When players have chose to call outside the blinds etc the chances are slightly higher that they have a piece of the pie

ya, im not a fan of betting the minimum, it give someone a REALLY cheap chnace to chase a gutshot or something, and like fonz said, it shows weakness when you dont want a call.

1. ill bet 3-4x here, if i get a call, if iget a call or a reraise, i have some info, and they may think im betting top pair, so they fold.

2. it really depends on how many people called the BB, if its 1-2 people, ill raie, if its 3 or more, i check and then depending on what they do, act accordingly.

3. same thing as 2nd

I will bet two to three times the blind and if anyone calls then fold if re-raised.
If called then my bet on the turn would also depend on the card that comes up. If table is fairly tight then I may push a little harder. If aggressive table then I may push hard and hope someone is just chasing. If so they either fold or have something in which case I may then be in trouble.

For me the aggressiveness of the table plays a big part.

you hit middle pair when :-

* Situation 1 : Your in the small blind and the other two players are the big blind and the button (common situation)
* Situation 2 : Your in the big blind (ie. small blind didnt call so your first to act)
* Situation 3 : The big blind and small blind arent in the hand for some reason and as your under the gun, your first to act

In all three situations I wouldn't be looking to play the hand. I find most of the time online that someone has hit top pair or some draw and you aren't going to easily win the hand. Sometimes against the right players you should lead out into the pot to either take it down or to define your hand. Defining your hand is over rated in online tournaments as most of the time the amount you need to bet to make it a decent read will damage your stack to much to be worth while.
