Default Check out Howards Article on Slowplaying

Alot of us on here are always talking about the danger of slowplaying and letting your opponent catch. But read the article about the other "danger" of slowplaying that Howard Lederer wrote. I really hadnt thought about this side of the coin much and really makes me think about how I play some hands.

So read it.

Then discuss.

Smile Good read

To start with can I please just clear this up as I'm slightly confused (trust me prof it doesn’t take a lot...lol).....1) Do you take your Nickname from Howard being called "theprofessor" as to start with I thought you and him were one of the same until I checked out your profile....2) is Howard a member here as I'm sure I have seen his pic somewhere or is that just somebody’s avatar.....?

To the article itself I was really pleased reading it as it's nice to see I'm already doing something right in my game if my understanding of it is correct (and it may not be) but I feel what he's saying is that you have to make people pay for their cards and if they do end up outdrawing you, you can still take the satisfaction that you were betting with the best hand up until the outdraw, and as the best hand will win more often than not you should continue this philosophy regardless as more often than not your winning hand will come through for you.

The one lesson I remember being taught when I 1st started playing live poker was "Always make them pay for their cards" and that is something I've always held on to throughout my poker playing days only now I have a better understanding of when I'm winning and what they need to beat me.

Like I said I may of got hold of the wrong end of the stick if so hopefully you can break it down for me Prof....either way good article.

Well, what you have said is what most people say about slowplaying. You should make them pay to see cards so that they dont outdraw you here. What he is saying in this article is a different point on why to not slowplay. He explains that slowplaying may cost you money in a pot even if you dont get outdrawn. An opponent may be more willing to put money into the pot after flopping say top pair to your trips, than he would be on the turn when say a third heart or three to the straight hits the board. So if you slowplay the flop, then a scare card for your opponent comes off, he will be more likely to fold and you will make less money on the hand then you would have if you had bet the flop.....hope that makes any sense.

And as to your question, yes I took the professor because of Howard and because I am a chemist (not a professor but still kind of fits).....And that picture of Howard is just someones avatar.

Guy from 2nd to the top, he says to make the max you can out of the hand by playing your cards strong to think your opponent has something strong too.
